| Welcome to Famous Pictures:The Magazine! Your definitive source of information for the world's most famous images, power pictures, cultural snapshots or the defining images of our time. But what are famous images? Taken literally the most famous image are things we see everyday. Logos, brands, pictures on currency, or everyday symbols are seen millions of times everyday all over the world. The Coca-Cola classic logo is probably the most viewed logo and Washington’s portrait has been printed on countless American one dollar bills for over a century. Speaking historically the most famous and most viewed symbol is the Christian cross which is older than the Islamic crescent but viewed by a greater audience than the Star of David. But these are all “work” images that most people don’t even see anymore; they are just part of the background.
This project is trying to document what non-work images are the most famous. Other sites widen the scope and try to document every image that was ever iconic but here we focus on images that are still part of the global consciousness. Admittedly as someone who has grown up in North America this has skewed what images are viewed as famous but I have tried to expand and included images like the Iraqi Solider who burned to death. The picture was not seen in the US but is iconic overseas. Celebrated author Andrew-Hoskins calls these famous images flashframes. Iconic images that contribute to the creation of new memory. He writes that if disseminated and repeated on a mass scale these images often promote recognition or association with an historical event. However over time the actual events are forgotten and only the photo remains. Famous Pictures: The Magazine will fill in the blanks and restore the thousand words behind the picture. |
