This famous shot of James Dean trudging through the rain in New York was part of a series of photos based on James Dean life. "The story, as I explained it, was to reveal the environments that affected and shaped the unique character of James Byron Dean"[1], New York representing the beginning of James Dean's acting career.

Dennis was able to get his costs for the shoot covered by Life magazine. Even though Dennis insisted on first exclusive rights to the picture story, Life only took one week to agree to his terms.[1]

Main Article:James Dean

James Byron Dean (February 8, 1931 – September 30, 1955) was an American film actor who epitomized youthful angst. Dean's mainstream status as a cultural icon is best embodied in the title of his most cited role in Rebel Without a Cause. As with Buddy Holly, Bruce Lee, and Marilyn Monroe his death at a young age helped guarantee a legendary status. Amazingly, his enduring fame and popularity rests on only three films, his entire starring output:

Dennis Stock

Stock was born in New York, 1928, to a Swiss father and British mother. At a young age his father died and he left to join the Navy at 16 in 1944. When he was released from the Navy he started a job at LIFE Magazine apprenticing under Gjon Mili, a photographer famous for experimenting with light and movement. In the late 50 early 60s he made a name for himself photographing big names in the US Jazz scene.

Part of the Magnum agency since the early 50s Stock became its first vice-president of its film division and in 1968 he had created a film production company, Visual Obectives Inc. He has lived all over the world and uses his celebrity to fund projects that are concerned with environmental causes.
