Around 2001 Ed Robinson was a young TV director living in London hoping to make a name for himself. Stopping him was hundreds of other talented directors dreaming the same dream. He filmed Headrush to as a small clip that would showcase his talents. The video features a man blowing up a dinghy while young boy comes running in, jumps on the dinghy and the man’s head blows up, "headrush". "Very short, very crass. And it was the first self-aware viral," -- Mr Robinson of his work[1]

Matt Smith who would later team up with Ed to form The Viral Factory talks about what happened next, "He sent it to a few of his mates, and then he had a meeting with an agency a couple of days later. He showed it and about half the people in the room said ‘Oh I saw that!’"[2]

Matt then runing a viral video webiste also saw the clip and that it had been downloaded 200,000 times since being hosted by his site. Smith who had tried and failed to make his own viral videos saw that clip was professionaly done and he got in touch with Ed. The two of them started The Viral Factory soon after.
