In August 1997, Joseph Vacanti (now the Director of the Tissue Engineering and Organ Fabrication Laboratory at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston^[1]) and a group of scientists published a ground-breaking paper in the journal, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. In the journal they showed a picture of a mouse with what appeared to be a human ear growing out of its back. This surreal image soon spread like wild fire as people emailed it to everyone they knew.
